What Changed Between ADSL & Fibre?

Its unimaginable that over a decade ago, we were living in a world where dial-up was the only way to get connected to the internet. Every phone call received interfered with and cut our connection. Thankfully, we have come a long way from dial-up technology and now have broadband technologies that deliver better internet access. Two most common broadband types are – ADSL & Fibre. Many recognise the difference between ADSL & Fibre to be the end result – speeds received. What they don’t understand is the technology behind ADSL & Fibre. Let’s get a better comprehension on these two broadband technologies by breaking them down!

Short for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, ADSL connections utilise unused copper wiring in standard phone lines to deliver internet access. The greatest benefit we get from an ADSL connection is that it uses a different frequency from dial-up which allows concurrent phone and internet usage. ADSL also does not require any special wire installation therefore, less expensive as compared to a Fibre connection.

Speeds received with an ADSL connection vary according to a few factors such as condition of copper wires and distance between your home and ISP’s (Internet Service Provider) exchange location. The further your home is from the exchange, the slower the ADSL speeds received. The typical download speeds received with an ADSL connection range from 7-24mbps and upload speeds of 380-820kbps.

Fibre

Fibre, or Fibre Optics, bypasses phone lines and uses smaller, lighter fibre optic cables with glass conductors. The advantages of Fibre easily makes it superior to ADSL. The only possible downside would be high installation costs if your home does not have the required infrastructure. Fibre harnesses the speed of light by transferring data through glass cabling making it the fastest and most reliable form of internet connection currently available.

Unlike ADSL, where distance from your exchange is in an inverse relationship with speeds received, Fibre holds no relationship. With Fibre, speeds received would not be affected by the distance from your exchange. Speeds received by Fibre connections are greatly increased compared to ADSL. Typical speeds range from 100mbps up to 10gbps, depending on the type of Fibre broadband plan your ISP provides.

Today, Fibre is the sought after and desired choice of broadband. The key reason would be the vast improvement in speeds we can experience. This was made possible with a change in material of wires have adapted from copper to glass allowing for faster and richer data transfer.
