How does Fibre Broadband work in your home?

Most of us know about about Fibre Broadband. The next generation network that has been installed in 95% of Singapore homes since 2010. As compared to other network forms such as Dial-up and ADSL Cables, Fibre Broadband allows for much greater download & upload speeds. As part of Singapore’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network, the infrastructure supporting Fibre has been deployed without cost to a majority of homes in Singapore. Most people living in Singapore would have therefore made a seamless switch between ADSL Cable to Fibre Broadband. For those that are on other network forms and are looking into shifting over to the superior network, these are a few important steps to note.

1. Check if your home is Fibre ready

NetLink Trust is responsible for Singapore’s nation-wide fibre network infrastructure – from building, repairing and operating. They are chosen by Info-communications Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA). Since 2010, NetLinkTrust (back then known as OpenNet), have been progressively contacting home owners for a free Fibre Termination Point (FTP) installation. If you have passed on that offer, installation charges now are applicable at the following costs: High Rise – $235.40, Landed – $481.50. 2. Set a first appointment with NetLinkTrust

Appointments with NetLinkTrust (NLT) are usually handled by your chosen Internet Service Provider (ISP). What NLT will do at the scheduled appointment would depend on the type of home you live in. For HDBs, NLT can simply pull the fibre cable to your door and trunk it along your corridor. For condominiums, NLT will have to first liaise with the respective Building Management on the installation of fibre cables & accessories within the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) room. With landed property cases, fibre cables will be installed via SingTel’s existing underground pipes. When NLT brings their contractors down, they will first place the FTP – you decide where you want it placed, of course, the contractors would have suggestions to help if you’re completely lost. They will then activate your line and connect you with your chosen ISP’s network.

3. Set the second appointment with your Internet Service Provider of choice

Once you’re home is Fibre ready, your chosen ISP is able to come and install your modem & router. Your modem connects to your ISP which provides the broadband service and translates the signals it gets from the optical fibre into electronic signals your router understands. Your router then shares this connection by allowing multiple devices to be connected to the same network. For more on routers & modems, read here. The whole timeline for this process can range from 1-4 weeks, which is a huge improvement (it used to take a few months!).

It might seem like a hassle and maybe even cause some downtime at home. However, making the switch to Fibre Broadband is crucial for our & the upcoming generations. Like Bill Gates said, “We’re changing the world with technology.” We as layman have to adapt to technology but also always remember that technology is only a tool for change – we the connected people will always be the agents of change!
